I NEED HELP

Have you entered the giveaway for a FREE Thermal Lunch Tote from Thirty-One?  Go here to do so.  Ends 1/13/2012

I need help.  But first, we must agree that there will be no judging.  K?  Were bloggy friends and will be nice to each other, right?  K!  Good!

You see, I need help with my living room.  It is the room everyone sees first, yet it is the most odd room in the house.  The ceilings are HIGH, and the room is shaped awe full!  Along with the odd layout, I have No.Idea. how to decorate it.  I'm normally good at this, too. But in this room, I'm lost!  I was going toward the "old" theme...but I love funky, too.  Can I do both?  Pick one? Want to see some pictures?

No storage in this area for hats, gloves, scarves, anything.  And the bench below...should it be painted?

Here's the don't judge part. We are a TV family.  Love it.  I know it kills my brain cells, but I can't help it.  See the old windows?  Would those be OK painted a brighter color, or will it kill the "character" of them?  And what about that noticeable empty space??  BOO!  {Ignore the sewing machine. HA!}

This whole wall is off to me....and I hate all of the pillows except for the one in the middle.

Empty space on walls.  Wall art doesn't quite go I don't think.  See my funky lamp in the corner?  LOVE IT STILL!!

See how tall the walls on either end are?

I know the dark wood on the TV stand and side tables do not really go at ALL, but, I have yet to convince the husband to get different ones.  And I can't bare to paint them just yet.

So, thoughts?  Idea's?  Please help.

  1. What about baskets for each kiddo for gloves, and such, and then a cubbie for their shoes under the basket? Put the baskets on the shelf and the cubbies under the bench, which could be painted. What about instead of painting the windows, add art with wild colors? That way you can change it out as you like, and you won't lose the character of the window frames?
    And you need LARGE art to cover those walls that look off. Vibrant colors, large prints. Stuff like that. Good luck!

  2. Thirty-One has some really cute stuff for storage! :) What if you were to get matching book cases to go on either side of the TV, you can put picture frames, books, dads etc on them. Then take the 2 windows and put them side by side above the couch. Above the love seat, I would put a painting or a large canvas print of your family. Maybe fancy up the lamp with coffee filters, I saw it on a DIY show on HGTV. If you google it you could find it i'm sure! :) Good Luck and I can't wait to see what you do!

  3. Just came across your blog from a link party! You have such WONDERFUL tall ceilings (I'm officially jealous!) You could do a gallery wall and stack large frames in a grid going up the wall above the couch. You really should take advantage of all that space! Same with the TV wall... build it up! What an exciting project you have going! :)

  4. I did similar hand-print trees and I had a custom vinyl saying made to put in between them. It will take up more space on your wall above your couch. I think your lamp is awesome. You could even do one of those wood and iron architectural pieces (maybe one that is like a peaked roof top) that they have at Hobby Lobby on top of the whole thing. Maybe get a much bigger lamp for the other side and keep the funky one. I think the window frames are great as-is. It would be awesome to build a boot bench with bead-board behind it and cubbies above it, frame that out and paint it to match the weathered windows. I also think a big lighter colored rug would be great!

  5. I have a weird room too, so I can relate! Maybe some funky wallpaper on that triangle wall behind the couch. Gallery wall, including a really large empty frame painted a fun color to fill up some space (build one out of moulding if they are too expensive). You could put a few smaller framed pictures inside the big frame. You could also add a few other things besides pictures, maybe some plates, a big letter? I would keep all the frames similar, maybe white or whatever color you want, or a few shades of blue or yellow, etc, on the frames. paint the tables white to keep the place bright, or a dove gray for more contemporary look. coordinate your pillows with the colors on the gallery/frame wall. Get an area rug or paint one of those plain ikea rugs.

    1. Ok - I am going to use the reply under beccalouise to post my comment (sorry beccalouise). I tried and tried to post a comment and could not do it. I am a follower, but still could not post one. My ideas for your room - so fun to redo a room. You had mentioned you wanted to make it look 'old' or something to that affect...so I suggest making a Hall Tree out of an old door, old (or new) wood for the bench, etc. They can look so classy. Then - you would have a place to put all of the gloves, shoes, etc. If you google 'hall tree's you can find some cute ideas for them. Your old windows - I have read some of your quotes - I love quotes too...and since you have the old windows you could put family photos in one of them and quotes about families in the other with vinyl...or you could do a mixture of both on both of them if you wish. You could do something with large wooden letters and photos in frames on the wall with high ceilings too. My kids have high ceilings and just got large frames and put their new family photos in them...and they are darling. When/if your hubby will agree - I would paint the tables to either coordinate or match the hall tree and windows...make them look old too. You could also put painted wood blocks or something along those lines under your couch to lift it some (making sure it is stable for sitting :) and that might help fill some space. You could add a tall floor lamp in the empty space or a small bookshelf (you could put books and/or movies there) of some sort. Can add a fresh coat of paint if wanted or needed to the walls too. Stenciling - as has been mentioned - is a really fun way to add decor/interest to a room. You could also add board and batten to the bottom of the wall w/stenciling on the inside of it. Have fun redoing your room!
